Carbon Roots International - Haiti

Haiti remains the poorest country in the Americas and one of the poorest in the world, with 59% of the population living below the national poverty line ($2.42/day).

Haiti's high rate of deforestation has exacerbated the country's poverty, causing soil erosion, degradation of water resources, and frequent incidences of extreme flooding.

Global HearthWorks is supporting Carbon Roots International - Haiti (CRI), a social enterprise delivering affordable, green charcoal to base-of-the-pyramid customers in one of the world’s poorest and most deforested countries. CRI uses sugarcane waste, purchased from local farmers, to produce cleaner burning, more efficient fuel briquettes, reducing reliance on wood-based charcoal while creating rural jobs.

Our support will enable CRI to increase its operational efficiency through key equipment purchases that will allow the company to expand its customer reach, improving more lives and saving more trees.
